ANOTHA ONE: Republicans Now Control More Than 50% of States Due To WV Governor Switch

Since Obama was elected in 2008, Republicans have gained more than 1,000 federal and state-level seats and as of this week, they just added one more.

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced at a Trump rally on Thursday that he will be switching parties from Democratic to Republican. The Washington Post reports that Justice feels the party has abandoned him and he can no longer help the state as a democratic governor. “This man is a good man,” the governor said about Donald Trump. “He’s got a backbone, he’s got real ideas, he cares about America, he cares about us in West Virginia.”

Governor Jim Justice traveled aboard Air Force One to a packed crowd in West Virginia. More than 9,000 people attended the event. West Virginia is a state that voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in the general election.

According to democratic officials, his announcement at the rally was the first they hard of the news. Justice did not notify the party of his swap.

Not only is this a major shock to the already crumbling democratic party, but one that deeply hurts their agenda as well. Republicans now have full control of the legislature and the state house in 26 states. Democrats only have full control of six. A map provided by Americans for Tax Reform shows the lop-sided control more closely.

The population of Republican-controlled states is 164,000,000, while the Democrats only control around 50,000,000. It’s important to note that 80% of the democratic controlled population comes from one state – California.

In 2016 we saw a devastating blow to democratic elected officials across the map. This move is a signal that the Democratic party has not found a way out of deep hole they have dug themselves in.
